Q: What's the purpose of this event?
A: To keep the Bay Area independent film scene thriving offering an action / adventure themed event.
Q: When is the Deadline and does it have to be created this year?
A: Tuesday, March 6, 2012. We recommend films to be done between now and the deadline, however, if you have something already produced after 2010, that's cool.
Q: What's the bottom line about using COPYWRITTEN MATERIAL?
A: Using material that is already Copywritten (i.e.- Clips from Other Movies, Stock footage, Music, Images), is allowed for those with no budget, however as a guideline, we do not recommend this for various reasons:
#1) This will restrict you from submitting your film into other festivals that may not accept copyright usage.
#2) This will restrict you from making any profit from your film such as DVDs, On-Demand charges, etc. should you want to sell it.
#3) You will not be able to file and own the full rights of your film.
#4) In order to obtain the rights to use copywritten material, you would have to get written permission from the rightful owners, which can be expensive.
Basically, down the line, using the Copywritten Material would be a headache to deal with. But if you just simply want to make your film for this event to show all your friends and family, go for it.
Q: But what about FAN FILMS and PARODIES?
A: Entertainment-wise, they are great! Yes, we do accept them, however, we usually leave this to first time filmmakers or for those who just can't think up their own material, Bottom line, if you are going to do another Batman or Spiderman film, Give us something we haven't seen yet:)
Q: What is the submission fee?
A: $10. For festivals usually averaging $40-$50 a submission, this fee is VERY reasonable. In addition, Torrid Productions hosts the only advertised film festivals that actually REFUND submission fees if not selected.
Q: Where do you get the gull to charge struggling filmmakers?
A: Someone has to pay the venue and publicity fees. Torrid Production will foot most of the bill, however, every little bit helps.
Q: What's the maximum length of film submission and what will it be judge on?
A: Anything 10 min. or under. The films will be judged on their merits of resourcefulness, style of storytelling, effort, and overall presentation. Even though this festival is geared towards Amateurs, the key is to "look professional". The bottom line to ask yourself is "Will my film be worth the 10 minutes that an audience member can not get back in their life?"
Q: Is this an all ages event?
A: Yes, however, we strongly suggest Parental Guidence since this is an ass-kicking violence - in nature- event.
Q: What is Torrid Productions?
A: A network of Filmmakers, Musicians, Artisans, and Promoters hosting a series of film festivals in the Bay Area including public forums on indie moviemaking..
Q: How "R" can we make our Rated R material?
A: At your discretion, we recommend everyone to use common sense. Blood is great, therefore, use as many gallons as you desire. Our only restrictions would include racial or sexual defamation, xxx, or snuff films. In additions, any product or organization promos would not be accepted.
Q: What's the best format to submit my film?
A: Whether you shoot your film on VHS or HD, most people turn their films in on DVD (-R). However, the show reel will be assembled with Apple's Final Cut Pro therefore, a better format is putting a QUICKTIME FILME version on CD using DV/NTSC - 780x480 pxls compression format.
(Torrid Productions will not claim any rights, representation, ownership, or responsibility of submitted materials. The authorship rights of each entry will be the sole responsibility of the person(s) submitting their film(s).
